Hautman Brothers win another federal duck stamp competition

Wildlife artist Jim Hautman won the prestigious Federal Duck Stamp contest with his painting of white-fronted geese (see attached).

This is Jim’s fourth winning entry since 1989. Jim also won top prize in 1989, 1994 and 1998 while brothers Bob and Joe won the 1992, 1997, 2001, 2002 and 2007 contests respectively. The Hautman Brothers – who were immortalized in the movie “Fargo” – have now won a combined 9 awards in the past 18 years; no easy feat considering winners must sit out the next three competitions.

Second place went to none other than Jim’s brother Bob. The brothers were tied for first place after the final round of judging with Jim winning the tie-breaking vote. Joe Hautman won the award in 2007 and thus was prohibited from entering.

Called the “Olympics of wildlife art,” the winner was announced Saturday at the David Brower Center in Berkeley, California, during the annual competition hosted by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services. Hautman’s artwork will grace the 2011-2012 Federal Duck Stamp, which goes on sale next summer. The stamp sells for $15 and raises roughly 25 million each year toward conserving wetlands. Jim's design was chosen from among 235 entries by artists from around the country.
