Joe Hautman wins Federal Duck Stamp contest... again!

Wildlife artist Joe Hautman won the 2012 Federal Duck Stamp art contest for the fourth time with his acrylic painting of a single wood duck. Joe also earned first place in 1992, 2002 and 2009.

Called the “Olympics of wildlife art", the winner was announced Saturday at the National Conservation Training Center in Shepherdstown, West Virginia, during the annual competition hosted by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services. Hautman’s artwork will grace the 2012-2013 Federal Duck Stamp, which goes on sale next summer. The cornerstone of one of the world’s most successful conservation programs, the stamp sells for $15 and raises roughly 25 million each year toward conserving wetlands. Joe's design was chosen from among 189 entries by artists from around the country.

The Hautman Brothers, Joe, Bob, and Jim have established themselves as America’s foremost family of wildlife artists. The three brothers have received numerous honors and awards, and have been a dominating presence in many state and national duck stamp competitions as referenced in the movie “Fargo”; filmmakers Ethan and Joel Coen grew up in the same suburban Minneapolis neighborhood and have followed their success throughout the years.

At last count, the three brothers have seen their art featured on over 50 state and federal conservation stamps including 10 Federal Duck Stamps over the past 19 years; an amazing feat considering all winners must sit out the following three years. Only Joe’s younger brother Jim (last year’s winner) has won the prestigious award as many times (four), while his other brother Bob has won it twice.
